APA Patches
One of the most popular parts of the APA awards program is the patches. Part of the fun and challenge with APA is the awards you can receive on a regular basis. Collect them all! Sew them on a vest or a towel... glue them to your cue case... put them in your trophy case along with the trophies you earn... throw them in a drawer... there are lots of things APA players do with their patches. The common thread is they take pride in them, so go ahead and feel good about your accomplishment - you earned it!
This is often a player's first patch. To earn it, you have to
win the lag
and then go on to win every game in the match - so you never have to rack the balls. This patch is only awarded for 8-ball.
This patch can be an elusive one - many people play for months or even years without getting it. Some have never done it in their lives. It sounds so simple. All you have to do is make the 8-ball on the break (without scratching). This is also awarded for 8-ball only (obviously?)
This patch takes a lot of skill and a bit of luck. First, you need a good break - making at least one ball. Then, you must sink all of your balls and the 8-ball in a single turn at the table without missing or scratching. When you get this, you're getting your game on for sure. Even 6's and most 7's don't do this on a regular basis.
It keeps getting tougher. Combine the challenging 8 On the Break with the elusive 8-ball Break and Run in a single match. It's not easy... and once you get one of these, you'll be one of a very select few players in the league that have them.
Make the 9-ball on the break (without scratching). No problem, right!? Again, this is usually an "easier said than done" type of thing... but who knows? It's generally easier to get a 9-snap than it is to get an 8-on-the-break. Some players with reasonably strong breaks have been known to get several in one day. It's not unheard of for lower skill level players to get this one, so go for it!
Make at least one ball on the break and then run the rack for ten points. No, sinking one ball on the break then sinking the 9-ball with a one-nine combo doesn't cut it... sorry! You need to run all the balls. No dead balls left on the table after the run. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Now go out and get 'er done!
Break and Run and 9-on-the-Snap in the same match earns you this one. Like the 8-ball version, these patches are rare indeed and when you get one everyone around you knows it's an accomplishment. Start thinking about that pro tour! OK, maybe not quite yet... but you're definitely a step closer than you were before you earned it.
When you get one of these, you're officially an APA ninja badass. It means that you've gotten an 8-on-the-Break, 8-ball Break and Run, 9-on-the-Snap, and 9-ball Break and Run in a single APA session. Obviously you need to be playing both 8-ball and 9-ball. It's a true accomplishment, even for the best players in the league. Despite rumors to the contrary, Chuck Norris does NOT have one of these.
These patches are awarded along with trophies to all members of a division champion team at the end of each session. There are different patches for each session - Summer, Fall and Spring. This patch saves you the hassle carrying your trophy everywhere just to prove that your team was the division champions!
The Top Gun patch is awarded to top shooters within each division. This award is broken down by skill level tiers (the same tiers used in the singles program) so everyone has a chance! If you win this award, it means that you've been a consistent and steady contributor to your team because the algorithm used favors the players that win the most match points for the team in a given session. Winning this award also earns you a slot in the exclusive invitation-only Top Gun tournament!
